Bangladesh stands at a crossroads, grappling with a question that echoes through its political landscape: Can Tarique Rahman, son of the late Khaleda Zia, truly carry forward her enduring legacy? The nation’s heart aches as it bids farewell to a towering figure, but amidst the sorrow, a critical chapter unfolds for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
On a somber Tuesday, Evercare Hospital in Dhaka became the epicenter of a nation’s grief as news spread of Khaleda Zia’s passing. The three-time prime minister and long-standing BNP leader had been under treatment since November 23, but her battle finally came to an end. Outside the hospital gates, supporters, party leaders, and ordinary citizens gathered in silent tribute, their tears and prayers a testament to her profound impact. “We couldn’t bear to stay home,” shared BNP activist Riyadul Islam, his voice heavy with emotion. “With no chance to see her one last time, we’re all here, united in our sorrow.”
Her funeral the following day on Manik Mia Avenue drew tens of thousands, a sea of mourners from across Bangladesh, alongside political leaders, interim government head Muhammad Yunus, and foreign diplomats. This outpouring underscored not just her national significance but her global influence. But here’s where it gets controversial: as the nation mourns, Khaleda’s death marks a seismic shift for the BNP, thrusting the party into uncharted territory just weeks before the February 12 national elections.
Khaleda Zia was more than a leader; she was the BNP’s moral compass, its unifying force, even during years of illness and political inactivity. Now, the party must navigate a post-Khaleda era, with her son, Tarique Rahman, stepping into the spotlight as acting chairperson. And this is the part most people miss: while Tarique has been portrayed as a unifying figure, his leadership remains untested, and the absence of Khaleda’s symbolic authority leaves a void that could destabilize the party’s internal dynamics.
For decades, Khaleda’s influence transcended formal leadership. Even when sidelined from active politics, she served as the party’s moral anchor, quelling factionalism and deferring leadership disputes. Mahdi Amin, Tarique’s adviser, hailed her as “a true guardian” of sovereignty, independence, and democracy. He vowed that the BNP would uphold her legacy through policies prioritizing parliamentary democracy, rule of law, human rights, and freedom of expression. But is this enough to bridge the gap left by her absence?
Amin argues that Tarique has already emerged as a unifying figure, citing his role in mobilizing opposition to Sheikh Hasina and crafting a 31-point reform agenda. The BNP’s electoral terrain has grown far more complex. For over three decades, Bangladesh’s politics were dominated by a binary rivalry between the BNP and the Awami League. But with the Awami League’s political activities banned following the July 2024 upheaval, the stage is now crowded with new players, including a formidable alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami. Senior BNP leaders, however, dismiss doubts about Tarique’s authority. Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a former commerce minister, asserts, “His leadership is proven. He’s capable of guiding the party effectively.” As the BNP gears up for the polls, analysts agree that Tarique’s ability to maintain discipline, champion reform, and ensure a peaceful election will define his leadership.

His Facebook post hinting at factors beyond his control has fueled criticism, though BNP leaders deny foreign involvement. For many supporters, however, the stakes are deeply personal. Dulal Mia, a lifelong BNP loyalist, recalls a childhood encounter with Ziaur Rahman that cemented his allegiance. “Tarique must carry his parents’ legacy,” he insists. “If he fails, the people will reject him.”
