A scandalous web of political intrigue and potential corruption has been exposed, leaving many questioning the integrity of former Brexit Party members. But is it all as it seems?
The Denial:
A former Brexit Party MEP, David Coburn, has vehemently denied allegations of accepting payments from a pro-Russian campaign. Coburn, a prominent figure in Nigel Farage's Brexit Party, was named in a series of WhatsApp messages between disgraced ex-MEP Nathan Gill and a suspected agent of Vladimir Putin's Russia.
The Context:
Coburn and Gill served as MEPs together for five years, with Coburn leading the UK Independence Party in Scotland and Gill heading the same party in Wales. The messages, released after Gill's conviction and 10-and-a-half-year jail sentence for accepting bribes to promote pro-Russia views, have raised eyebrows.
The Evidence:
In these messages, Oleg Voloshyn, a former pro-Russian Ukrainian politician, discusses money set aside for Coburn while bribing Gill. The BBC, however, has not found direct evidence of Coburn receiving any funds. Coburn was questioned outside his French chateau and denied being paid to promote pro-Russian interests, but he became less responsive when asked about his name appearing in court documents.
The Connections:
Coburn and another former UKIP and Brexit Party MEP, Jonathan Arnott, accompanied Gill to two pro-Russian TV channels in Ukraine in 2018. Interestingly, both Coburn and Arnott spoke in support of these channels in the European Parliament, where Gill gave a paid speech. Arnott claims he would have reported Gill to the police if offered money and that his speech criticized Russia.
The Controversy:
But here's where it gets controversial. In the same year, Coburn echoed Gill's sentiments in the European Parliament, questioning Ukraine's readiness for EU entry. The channels in question were later shut down under Ukraine's current president, Volodomyr Zelensky. Gill had also arranged interviews with other MEPs for these channels, some from UKIP and the Brexit Party, but the court found no evidence they knew of Gill's bribery.
The Investigation:
The Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism unit believes Gill had a leadership role in influencing other MEPs to support Russia's narrative in Ukraine. They suggest money was set aside to pay others, but no arrests or interviews have been conducted beyond Gill. The FBI examined Voloshyn's phone, and the US and UK governments sanctioned him for undermining Ukraine's government.
The Fallout:
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Reform UK leader Nigel Farage to investigate potential links between his party and Russia. Farage expresses confidence that no other party members were involved, but calls for a broader inquiry into Russian and Chinese interference in British politics, suggesting MI5's involvement. Reform UK denies any current association with Coburn.
