Uniting for a Cause: Team CSL's Journey with the Alpha-1 Community
In the spirit of Alpha-1 Awareness Month, let's delve into the inspiring story behind the 2025 Escape to the Cape Bike Trek.
This autumn, CSL employees embarked on a meaningful journey, joining hands with the Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency patient community for the annual Escape to the Cape Bike Trek in Cape Cod. It's a tradition that speaks volumes about their commitment to this rare disease community.
The Alpha-1 Foundation's "Riding for a Reason" event is a September staple, inviting participants to embark on a three-day cycling adventure along the picturesque coastal paths of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. But here's where it gets controversial: this trek is more than just a scenic ride; it's a powerful movement to raise awareness and funds for Alpha-1 research, a disease that affects the lungs and liver, often leading to breathing difficulties and the need for assistive oxygen.
Phil Klara, an Associate Director in Product Marketing, shares his experience, "Alpha-1 can be a debilitating disease, but the Alphas I met during the trek are an inspiration. They refuse to let it define them. I rode with an Alpha Angel patch, a reminder of the strength and resilience of those affected. It's a privilege to be part of this community, and I believe we can make a real impact together."
And this is the part most people miss: the personal stories that make this trek so powerful. Dee, an Alpha-1 patient, cycled an incredible 103 miles this year, proving that determination knows no bounds. "Alpha-1 has its challenges, but I won't let it hold me back. I rode for myself, but also for every Alpha patient out there," she said.
Emma Hatcher, CSL's Director of U.S. Advocacy, adds, "This trek is a testament to the Alpha-1 community's spirit and support for each other. It allows us to connect with patients on a deeper level and see the incredible work of the Alpha-1 Foundation firsthand."
So, as we reflect on this inspiring journey, let's remember the power of community and the impact we can have when we come together. What do you think? Is this more than just a bike trek, or is it a symbol of hope and resilience? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
