The inaugural FIA Karting Arrive and Drive World Cup roared to life at the LYL International Circuit, Asia's largest karting facility, hosting two categories – junior and senior – of up-and-coming drivers. From November 14th to 16th, 107 drivers representing an impressive 50 nationalities battled it out in identical, standardized karts provided by the OTK Group. This 'arrive and drive' concept is key: drivers don't need to own or maintain their own equipment, drastically reducing the cost of entry. It's like a rental car service, but for high-speed racing!
And this is the part most people miss... the event isn't just about racing. It's about development. A significant number of female racers, 15 in total, are participating – the highest number ever in an FIA Karting competition. Furthermore, 17 drivers from Southeast Asia are competing in this landmark event, highlighting the region's growing motorsport presence. Beyond the on-track action, the FIA prioritized driver development through comprehensive workshops focusing on crucial aspects like driver safety, nutrition, anti-doping protocols, media training, and a deeper understanding of the FIA International Karting Ranking system. These workshops provide drivers with valuable skills and knowledge applicable both on and off the racetrack, nurturing them into well-rounded athletes and ambassadors for the sport. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the significance of the event, stating, "The debut FIA Karting Arrive and Drive World Cup marks an exciting new chapter for grassroots motorsport across the world... The support for this new format has been incredible, and it shows our global commitment to increasing accessibility, growing motorsport participation, and empowering the next generation of talent.”
Hon. Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Youth and Sports for the Federal Government of Malaysia, echoed this sentiment, adding, “We are proud to host this landmark event in Malaysia, highlighting our commitment to strengthening motorsport development in the country. Thank you to the FIA for this collaboration.”
Akbar Ebrahim, President of the FIA Karting Commission, further elaborated, stating, “The FIA Karting Arrive and Drive World Cup is more than just a race, it will be an opportunity for promising racing talent from across the world to prove their racecraft and develop as well-rounded drivers at the start of their careers... all eyes will be on Malaysia this month as we showcase accessible, affordable motor sport which puts the drivers centre stage.”
Lung-Nien Lee, FIA Vice-President for Sport - Asia-Pacific, highlighted the region's burgeoning motorsport scene, stating, “Motorsport in the Asia-Pacific region is thriving, and this event will once again give rising talent from around the world a platform to showcase their skills while advancing driver development through innovative workshops.”
President Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) added, “Working with the FIA to support the next generation of talent is one of our key missions, so we are delighted to be welcoming over 100 drivers from 50 nationalities to Malaysia for this milestone event.”
