Indonesia's commitment to naval modernization deepens with the acquisition of two more Arrowhead 140-derived frigates. This significant milestone in the £4 billion Maritime Partnership Programme (MPP) with Babcock International signifies a strategic alliance to enhance Indonesia's maritime capabilities. The MPP, signed last year, aims to go beyond individual ship sales, focusing on the modernization of Indonesia's naval forces and associated shipbuilding infrastructure.
This latest agreement builds upon the initial export of two Arrowhead 140 licences in 2021, showcasing Indonesia's unwavering dedication to the design. The launch of the KRI Balaputradewa, the first ship of the Merah Putih frigate class, in December 2022, marked a crucial step in the programme. It demonstrated the progress of local construction and the transfer of design and build knowledge, reinforcing the MPP's potential to revolutionize Indonesia's naval landscape.
The Arrowhead 140 design, also selected by Poland and underpinning the Type 31 frigate project, gains further recognition with these new licences. This design's success not only bolsters the UK's naval architecture and shipbuilding industry but also fosters economies of scale in manufacturing and support for every new vessel added to the programme. Consequently, Babcock has been able to invest in UK workforce development, creating around 1,600 early-career roles across the organization by 2025-2026.
