Martin Parr: The Artist Behind My Photography Journey
I owe a significant part of my passion for photography to Martin Parr, whose work left an indelible mark on me. The fact that his iconic photographs were captured near my hometown of Liverpool made his influence even more profound.
His project, 'The Last Resort' (https://www.magnumphotos.com/arts-culture/society-arts-culture/martin-parr-the-last-resort/), focused on New Brighton, a northern coastal town in Britain, which was intended to rival the renowned Brighton in the south. But it never quite reached those heights.
Parr's visit to New Brighton in the 1980s, supposedly its prime, resulted in a series of captivating yet somber images. He had a unique talent for transforming the mundane into something extraordinary. In a 2024 talk, he confessed that such photos would be unthinkable in today's world, given the heightened suspicion around photography.
The recent passing of Parr at 73 (https://petapixel.com/2025/12/07/acclaimed-british-photographer-martin-parr-dies-at-73/) was a shock, especially as he had alluded to an illness during a live talk I attended.
As a young photographer, I embarked on a ferry ride across the Mersey, following Parr's path, seeking my own unique shots in New Brighton. This led to a series of photos featuring abandoned shopping carts, which caught the eye of my tutor, who urged me to pursue photography professionally. Without Parr and my teacher's encouragement, my career path might have been very different.
Parr's work, especially 'The Last Resort', has been a subject of debate. He once said, 'There's always been an element of controversy... I'm just showing things as they are.' This statement raises an intriguing question: Is photography merely a reflection of reality, or does it shape our perception?
While some locals might find 'The Last Resort' offensive, these photos are my all-time favorites. I, like many, appreciate the artistic portrayal of everyday life, and Parr excelled at this. But here's where it gets controversial: Is it ethical to photograph people without their explicit consent?
