Ilia Topuria claims that his UFC hiatus stems from false accusations of domestic abuse. In a Monday social post, the MMA star asserted that untrue claims have pressured him to step away from defending his titles. Topuria, who added the lightweight belt to his featherweight crown after a knockout win over Charles Oliveira earlier this year, unexpectedly announced in late November that he would take a break from the Octagon. His absence paves the way for Paddy Pimblett to face Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title on January 24.
On Monday, Topuria offered more context about his decision to pause his title defense.
"Over the past several weeks, I have made the difficult choice to temporarily step back from defending my title," he stated online. "This was not a decision I took lightly. However, when events threaten my personal integrity, my family, and my reputation, there comes a time when you must confront them directly."
"In recent months, I have faced extreme and unacceptable pressure, including threats to publish false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met. These allegations are completely baseless..."
"All pertinent evidence has been carefully safeguarded and documented, including audio recordings, written communications, witness statements, and video material. This evidence has been submitted to the proper judicial authorities to pursue legal action for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property, and multiple threats."
Topuria added: "I have complete faith in the judicial process and will let the legal system determine the facts based on evidence. Out of respect for my children and the ongoing legal proceedings, I will refrain from making any further public statements."
