Ghetts, born Justin Clarke-Samuel, found himself behind bars for 12 years after a series of unfortunate events led to the death of a young student, Yubin Tamang. The incident occurred in north-east London, where Clarke-Samuel's BMW collided with Tamang, a 20-year-old Nepalese national. In a tearful statement, Tamang's mother, Sharmila, expressed her grief: "My son came to the UK for his studies, believing it offered the best education. Little did we know that his life would be cut short due to someone's reckless actions."
Tamang's roommate, Sushant Khadka, added, "Yubin was full of dreams and aspirations. His life, full of promise, was taken away too soon."
The sentencing, televised for all to see, was presided over by Mark Lucraft KC, the most senior judge at the Old Bailey. Lucraft described the CCTV footage leading up to the collision as "appalling" and "shocking."
According to the prosecutor, Philip McGhee, Clarke-Samuel had been drinking at a central London lounge before the incident. He was over the legal drink-drive limit and driving at excessive speeds, failing to stop at red lights and veering dangerously.
The rapper was traveling at 67mph in a 30mph zone when he hit Tamang, who was crossing the road in Ilford. Clarke-Samuel did not stop, made no attempt to call for help, and drove back home, a distance of eight miles. Tamang succumbed to his injuries two days later in the hospital.
Police arrested Clarke-Samuel at his home the following day, noting the smell of alcohol on his breath. His BMW was found to be significantly damaged.
In court, the defendant claimed he drove dangerously out of fear of being pursued, but no evidence of a chase was found on CCTV. His lawyer attributed this fear to a previous incident where Clarke-Samuel was robbed at gunpoint.
Despite his criminal record, which included convictions for robbery and driving offenses, the judge acknowledged the musician's remorse and the positive impact he had made on his community through his music.
