On Saturday, the United States announced a significant military action in Syria, targeting a leader associated with an al Qaeda affiliate. This operation is particularly notable as it comes in the wake of a tragic attack by an ISIS assailant that resulted in the deaths of three Americans earlier in December.
Admiral Brad Cooper, who commands US Central Command (CENTCOM), emphasized the importance of this strike in a statement shared on X, asserting that "the elimination of a terrorist operative linked to the deaths of three Americans highlights our unwavering commitment to pursuing those who threaten our forces."
According to CENTCOM, the individual targeted, Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, was described as a seasoned terrorist leader with direct connections to the ISIS gunman responsible for the deadly ambush that killed two US service members and a civilian interpreter on December 13, 2025, near Palmyra, Syria.
In light of these events, CNN has sought comments from CENTCOM regarding the recent strike and further insights into al-Jasim's alleged relationships with the attacker involved in the December incident.
Following the assault, the US has launched a series of retaliatory airstrikes against ISIS, collectively referred to as "Operation Hawkeye Strike," aimed at dismantling the terror group's operational capabilities.
In response to the announcement from CENTCOM, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took to X, stating, "We will never forget, and we will never relent," reinforcing the message of resilience and determination against terrorism.
