US & UK Issue Warnings Over Somalia E-Visa Data Breach | What You Need to Know (2025)

A massive data breach in Somalia's e-visa system has put the personal information of tens of thousands of applicants at risk, including US citizens. This is a serious situation, and here's what you need to know.

According to the American embassy in Somalia, credible reports indicate that 'unidentified hackers' infiltrated the Somali government's e-visa platform. This breach potentially exposed the data of at least 35,000 individuals. The compromised data includes sensitive details like names, photos, dates of birth, marital status, home addresses, and email contacts. The UK has also issued a warning to travelers, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the breach and the potential exposure of personal data entered into the system. They advise travelers to carefully consider the risks before applying for an e-visa required for travel to Somalia.

But here's where it gets controversial...

While the Somali authorities haven't officially commented on the breach, they've quietly moved their visa service from evisa.gov.so to etas.gov.so, without providing any explanation. The US embassy in Mogadishu has stated that individuals who have applied for a Somali e-visa may be affected, although they can't confirm if specific data has been compromised. The BBC has reached out to the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) for comment.

And this is the part most people miss...

The new system requires all travelers, including those from the self-declared republic of Somaliland and the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, to apply for entry visas online. Critics have raised concerns about additional fees in certain regions, which have reportedly doubled the charges.

This breach is happening against a backdrop of ongoing tensions...

Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991 but isn't internationally recognized, governs itself with its own institutions. Somalia considers the region part of its sovereign territory. The alleged breach adds to existing disagreements between Mogadishu and Hargeisa over control of Somali airspace. Despite Somalia regaining full control of its airspace in 2017, Somaliland continues to dispute this arrangement.

The situation escalated further when Somaliland's President, Abdirahman Irro, rejected Somalia's e-visa and ordered airlines to obtain clearance from Hargeisa before entering its airspace. Major airlines have refused to board passengers without Somalia's e-visa approval, leading to travelers being stranded at airports. Somaliland's Foreign Minister, Abdirahman Dahir Aadan, insists that 'anyone travelling to Somaliland will obtain their visa on arrival,' citing concerns about the safety of Somalia's e-visa system and the risk of data falling into the wrong hands.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, stated that directives, first announced earlier this year, came into effect on November 10th. Airlines that don't comply will be rerouted, with several aircraft already affected. Footage from Somaliland's aviation ministry shows local air-traffic controllers issuing instructions to international pilots, which is seen domestically as an assertion of Somaliland's autonomy.

However, the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority maintains sole administrative and legal control over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (FIR), which encompasses the entire nation's airspace. They've ordered all aircraft to disregard any instructions from authorities other than Mogadishu, warning of safety risks and legal consequences for non-compliance with Somali and international aviation rules.

What do you think? Do you believe the data breach highlights a need for increased data security measures? How should the international community respond to the ongoing tensions between Somalia and Somaliland? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
