Veronika Kudermetova on the 'Special Home-Like' Feeling of Playing in Russia
Veronika Kudermetova, a renowned tennis player, shares her unique perspective on playing in Russia, describing it as a "home-like" experience. Despite her demanding schedule, Kudermetova, who is married to her coach Sergei Demekhine, rarely finds time to return to her home country, Russia. However, when she does, she cherishes her time in her hometown of Kazan, where she trains and spends quality moments with her family.
Kudermetova's recent participation in the Northern Palmyra Trophies in St. Petersburg showcased her exceptional skills. She was part of the Sphinxes team, alongside Yulia Putintseva, Daniil Medvedev, and Karen Khachanov, winning the mixed team event. The event, held regularly since 2022, fills a void left by the absence of ATP or WTA tournaments in Russia since 2021.
When asked about her emotions while playing in Russia, Kudermetova expressed a profound connection to the country. She noted the significance of the language barrier, where everyone around her speaks Russian, creating a distinct atmosphere in St. Petersburg. This "home-like" feeling, she explained, sets Russia apart from other tournaments held outside the country, where she is now based.
This year, Kudermetova achieved remarkable success, posting a 35-25 record in singles and finishing as the world No. 30. In doubles, she and her partner Elise Mertens won Wimbledon and the WTA Finals, further solidifying her position as a top-tier tennis player.
