Weighing an impressive 3,563 carats, this extraordinary gem was showcased recently in Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. Its current owners are looking to sell this exquisite piece, which is valued at a staggering minimum of $300 million.
This round-shaped gemstone, aptly named the "Star of Pure Land," holds the title of the largest recognized natural purple star sapphire, according to Ashan Amarasinghe, a seasoned consultant gemologist who spoke to the media about its astounding characteristics. "This gem is truly one of a kind," Amarasinghe stated, emphasizing its remarkable asterism—a phenomenon where light reflects off the stone to create a star-like pattern. He noted that the sapphire exhibits six distinct rays of asterism, distinguishing it from other stones and adding to its unique allure.
The Star of Pure Land is owned by a group known as the Star of Pure Land Team, who have opted to keep their identities private for safety concerns. Interestingly, one of the team members shared that this incredible gemstone was unearthed in a gem pit located near the small town of Rathnapura, often referred to as the "city of gems." This discovery took place in 2023, and after acquiring it along with several other gemstones, they realized the exceptional nature of this particular stone approximately two years later. To further validate its uniqueness, they sought certification from two different laboratories.
International appraisers have estimated the value of this exceptional sapphire to be between $300 million and $400 million, reinforcing the reputation of Sri Lankan sapphires, which are celebrated globally for their brilliant color, clarity, and luster.
